I am a rather "new born" blogger. I have only been doing this for about what, seven or eight months now. I am a writer, I love it. I am an English Lit graduate so this comes as second nature to me. I have had a few other blog pages ( Restaurant reviews, current events, entertainment.. etc) yet nothing was this serious till one day I thought, Hey! my style rocks (JK) and I should share my Knowledge with the world and that is how Montreal fashionista was born.
Before I started publishing, I googled and researched quite a bit. How to maintain a fashion blog, how to keep people interested, and I also searched how to make money by blogging. " We all would like a little bit of extra cash, right?" And now I understand all the posts and answers that I was seeing and thinking they do not make sense cause in my head I thought once your page is up and running you will start racking up the $$,and that is where I was wrong, let me share what I have learned till now
First and foremost if you are doing this for the money, then quit while you are ahead. If you are not in this because you are passionate about the topic of choice then you will not make it far.
You have to know that for the next year, if not more you will actually be spending out of your own pocket ( yes still have a day job). You will need to invest in products, items, tickets, events etc things that you need to see and places you will be seen. Potential clients will ask to see your work before making you their brand ambassador or as simple as hand out samples.
As you build a page, Instagram account, get views and followers do not be afraid to speak up. Walk in to a department store, go to a cosmetics counter or even a drug store and tell the staff who you are and what you do, ask if they would like you to review anything. do not insist, just casually ask, and 99.9% of the time they will be interested.
You will also invest a lot of time into your blog, you need to make people keep coming and you can not lose the viewers/readers interest. Whether you have a bad week, a long day what ever it is you need to sit yourself down and write, if you have products then most likely have a review deadline that needs to be matched. The page needs to be updated, the topics have to be up to date, and interesting which means you need to make time during your week to jot down ideas of topics that you will be covering and you have to be au courrant with all that is going on.
Have a blogger icon, that you follow ( not imitate ) the style of, some one you may look at as a blogging mentor. Join a blogging network, that is one of the best ways to get exposure.
In the case of fashion bloggers, people need to remember that we are not models. Yes we love fashion and style but we also have a day to day life that we deal with. At times we may be happy, sad, tired, emotional, busy etc..so if I run into the store with my hair up in a pony tail or a messy bun and minimal make up do not look at me as if I am a mess that isn't doing well for herself.
I am passionate about what I am doing, I love the work and time I am putting into it, and as well love the recognition and exposure I am getting in return. Work hard play even harder, that is my moto.
Cheers dolls! xxx
